DoelenKwartet

The DoelenKwartet (Frank de Groot, Maartje Kraan, Karin Dolman and Hans Woudenberg) was formed in the mid 1990s by members of the Rotterdam-based DoelenEnsemble. The focus of this quartet is on music of the 20th and 21st centuries, at times as viewed from the perspective of the 19th century. It can draw at will upon the overwhelming wealth of quartet literature comprised of thousands of well-known and lesser known works. The time has come to experience the works of Bartok, Hartmann, Apostel, Britten and many other composers from the first half of the previous century. But the quartet also takes on the pioneering task of performing works by young composers, particularly those of the "Rotterdam School". The many encounters with contemporary composers are a direct sourse of inspiration to the DoelenKwartet (Dutilleux, Boesmans, de Vries, Adams,
Wagemans, Kagel etc.). A particular bond exists between the quartet and the music of Wolfgang Rihm.
